Tucked away in a little corner somewhere in Jurong is a piece of quiet haven where the air is fresh and you are filled with a sense of tranquility. It’s like you’ve stepped out of the hustle and bustle that is Singapore and into a kampong of sorts where the pace is slower and life simpler.
This is also where you’ll find the one and only working dragon klin in Singapore. Built in 1940, the dragon klin has been cared for and operated by the Tan family of Thow Kwang ever since 1965. Take a peek into the cool interior of the klin and you’ll be amazed at this piece of history that is still capable of firing up to 5,000 pieces of ceremic work in one session.
Of course, the important thing is that here, you can pick up Chinese pottery and ceremics at kickass prices. There’s a wonderful variety to choose from and the friendly staff are always around to offer help – whether it’s dishing out advice on which piece to pick, drilling in a hole in your flower pot or converting the many beautiful vases into table lamps.
Turned out to be a pretty fruitful trip. The MIL happily went home with a couple of flower pots to plant her mint leaves and we managed to get new lampshades for the Thow Kwang lamps we bought a couple of years back. And we all got a peaceful couple of hours on an otherwise busy Saturday afternoon.
