I fell in love with Shel Silverstein many years ago when The Hubs showed me one of his favourite children’s books "The Giving Tree" on our first date. It was a simple and poignant story that left a deep impression on me. Of course, The Hubs also left a deep impression back then. Afterall, what could be sexier than a man who reads? Heh, heh.
Anyhoo, while browsing through a book sale today, I gleefully stumbled upon a hard cover copy of "The Missing Piece" by Silverstein and walked away with my prize for only ten bucks!!!
"The Missing Piece" tells the beautiful story of a circle that goes in search of his missing piece. Sadly, when he does find his missing piece, he finds that it does not make him happier. It is a touching tale of quest and fulfillment. I suppose the story would mean different things to different people. For me, the book is about being whole in yourself. Often, we are like the circle. We go in search of the perfect soulmate, perfect job, perfect life to complete ourselves because we think once we find this "missing piece", we would finally be happy. But we forget that no one owes us happiness. Only when we learn to love and complete ourselves then can we be truly happy, and make another person happy.
A heartwarming tale for both young and old. Read it for yourself.
